NEGATIVE PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES

A. Look at the following extract from the text on page 12.
Does the prefix mis- add a positive or a negative meaning to the word understanding?

هل البادئة تضيف معنى ايجابيًا أو سلبيًا لكلمة فهم؟

- كلمة understanding تعني ( فهم )

- البادئة mis في كلمة understanding أضافت معنى سلبي negative حيث أصبح معنى الكلمة سوء فهم.

B. Look at the word in bold in the sentence below.
What does it mean? Choose a or b.

انظر إلى الكلمة بالخط العريض في الجمله أدناه. ماذا تعني؟ اختر أ أو ب.

Don't lend Tony your car; he is a very careless driver.

لا تُعير سيارتك لتطوني. إنه سائق مهمل جدا.

Note: ملاحظه

• The prefixes un-, in- and mis- are used before adjectives, adverbs and nouns to

give them the opposite meaning
(happiness - unhappiness, correct-incorrect, understanding - misunderstanding).

تُستخدم البادئات un ، in و mis قبل الصفات والظروف والأسماء

لتُعطيهم معنى مقابل (العكس) (السعادة - التعاسة ، صحيحة - غير صحيحة ، فهم سوء الفهم).

• The suffix -less is used after a noun to form an adjective which means without that quality or

characteristic (care-careless).

تُستخدم اللاحقة less بعد اسم لتُصيغ صفة تعني دون تلك الجودة أو بدون ميزة (الرعاية-لا مبال).

Complete the sentences using the correct form of the words in capitals.
