Two-Word- and Three-Word Verbs
The meaning of two- and three-word verbs is often very different from the words taken separately.
غالبًا ما يكون معنى الأفعال المكونة من كلمتين أو ثلاث كلمات مختلفًا تمامًا عن الكلمات المأخوذة بشكل منفصل.
1. Verb + adverb particle
to put something off (postpone)
لوضع شيء (تأجيل)
They put off the meeting until next week.
لقد أجلوا الاجتماع حتى الأسبوع المقبل.
to give something up (stop doing)
للتخلي عن شيء (توقف عن العمل)
He gave up smoking for health reasons.
لقد تخلى عن التدخين لأسباب صحية.
to take something up (begin)
لاتخاذ شيء ما (يبدأ)
I’m going to take up karate.
سوف ابدأ (احترف) الكاراتيه.
to throw something away (discard)
لرمي شيء بعيدا (تجاهل)
Don’t throw away your old clothes.
لا ترمي ملابسك القديمة.
to turn something down (refuse)
لرفض شيء ما (رفض)
The committee turned down my proposal.
رفضت اللجنة اقتراحي.
2. Verb + adverb particle + preposition
to get along with someone (be friendly)
للحصول على جنبا إلى جنب مع شخص (تنسجم, تكون ودي)
I get along well with Fatima.
أنا أتفق مع فاطمة.
to put up with someone or something (accept a bad situation)
لتحمل شخص أو شيء ما (قبول موقف سيء)
My boss is difficult to put up with.
مديري من الصعب تحمله.
Pronoun objects go between the verb and particle.
ضمائر المفعول به تأتي بين الفعل والأداة.
I can’t find my old sneakers. Did you throw them away?
لا يمكنني العثور على حذائي القديم. هل رميتهم بعيدا؟
Nouns can go between the verb and particle or after the particle.
يمكن أن تذهب الأسماء بين الفعل والأدوات أو بعدها.
I threw the sneakers away. I threw away the sneakers.
رميت أحذية رياضية بعيدا. رميت بعيدا أحذية رياضية.
