We use the Past Progressive:
نستخدم الماضي المُستمر لكل من:
• for an action that was happening at a specific point of time in the past.
لحدث كان يحدث في وقت معين في الماضي.
مثال:
I was watching TV at seven o'clock yesterday evening.
كنت أشاهد التلفاز في الساعة السابعة مساء أمس.
• to describe background scenes in a story.
لوصف مشاهد الخلفية في القصة.
مثال:
It was raining and Jim was walking in the forest.
كانت السماء تمطر وكان جيم يمشي في الغابة.
• for actions that were happening at the same time in the past.
In this case we usually use while.

عن الأحداث التي كانت تحدث في نفس الوقت في الماضي.
في هذه الحالة نستخدم عادة while.
مثال:
While Mum was cooking, Jane was reading a book.
بينما كانت أمي تطبخ ، كانت جين تقرأ كتابًا.
We use the Past Progressive and the Past Simple in the same sentence when one
action that was happening in the past was interrupted by another.
We use the Past Progressive for the longer action
and the Past Simple for the shorter action that interrupted the longer one.
We usually use while + Past Progressive
نستخدم الماضي المستمر والماضي البسيط في نفس الجملة
عندما يقاطع أحدهما الآخر.

إذا كان لدينا في الجملة زمنين اثنين ماضي مستمر وماضي بسيط,
فإننا نستخدم الماضي المستمر للحدث الأطول
والماضي البسيط للحدث الأقصر الذي قاطع الحدث الأطول.
نستخدم عادةً while + الماضي المستمر
and when + Past Simple.
و نستخدم when + الماضي البسيط.
الأمثلة:
While I was driving, I saw a cat in the street.
بينما كنت أقود السيارة ، رأيت قطة في الشارع.
I was sleeping when the telephone rang.
كنت نائماً عندما رن جرس الهاتف.
