Past Simple
زمن الماضي البسيط

• We form the Past Simple of regular verbs by adding –ed to the base form of the main verb.

نُصيغ الماضي البسيط من الأفعال المنتظمة بإضافة ed- إلى الشكل الأساسي للفعل الرئيسي.

The Past Simple form is the same for all persons in the singular and in the plural.

صيغة الماضي البسيط تُستخدم مع جميع الأشخاص سواء مفرد أو ماضي.

work ➝ worked 
walk ➝ walked 
clean ➝ cleaned

• Each irregular verb forms the affirmative form of the Past Simple in a different way. 

كل فعل غير منتظم يُصاغ منه شكل الماضي البسيط بطريقة مختلفة. 

يعني لا نضيف هذه المره ed بل الكلمة كلها تختلف. 

go ➝ went 
buy ➝ bought 
sit ➝ sat

• Verbs ending in –e, take only –d.

الأفعال التي تنتهي بـ e تأخذ فقط d.

لأنها أساسا تنتهي بـ e

مثال:

explore - explored

• Verbs with one syllable ending in one vowel + one consonant, 
double the consonant before the –ed.

الأفعال ذات المقطع الواحد المنتهية بحرف عله متحرك واحد + ثم حرف ساكن، 

← عند تصرفيها للماضي نضاعف فيها الحرف الساكن قبل ed.

مثال:

stop - stopped

• Verbs with two or more syllables ending in a stressed vowel + one consonant, 
double the consonant before the –ed.

الأفعال ذات مقطعين فأكثر و تنتهي بحرف عله مشدد + ثم حرف ساكن

← عند تصريفها للماضي نضاعف فيها الحرف الساكن قبل ed.

الأمثلة:

prefer - preferred but visit - visited (the last syllable isn’t stressed)

• Verbs ending in a consonant + -y, change the y to i before the –ed.

الأفعال التي تنتهي بحرف ساكن + حرف y 

فإننا نحذف y ونضع بدلا منه i

ولكن ليس دائماً

الأمثلة:

try - tried 
but 
play - played

• Verbs ending in one vowel + l, double the –l before the –ed.

الأفعال التي تنتهي بحرف علة واحد + حرف l

فإننا نضاعف حرف l

ولكن ليس دائماً

الأمثلة:

travel - travelled 
but sail - sailed (the verb ends in two vowels +-l)

We use the Past Simple:

نستخدم الماضي البسيط لكل من:

• for actions that took place at a definite time in the past.

لأحداث حدثت في وقت محدد في الماضي.

مثال:

We bought our house five years ago.

اشترينا منزلنا منذ خمس سنوات.

• for habitual or repeated actions in the past.

 للأحداث المعتادة أو المتكررة في الماضي.

مثال:

I always went to bed early when I was a student.

كنت دائمًا أنام مبكرًا عندما كنت طالبًا.

• for completed actions that happened one after the other in the past.

للأحداث المنجزة التي حدثت واحدة تلو الأخرى في الماضي.

مثال:

Yesterday, I got up at 8:00, had breakfast and left for school.

أمس ، استيقظت في الساعة 8:00 ، تناولت الإفطار وغادرت إلى المدرسة.

Past Simple of the verb be: was/were

الماضي البسيط من فعل كن له شكلين هما: was و were
