Expressing Wishes, Regret and Criticism

Verb: Wish
الفعل: يتمنى
Use wish for things that happened in the past that you now regret.
استخدم الفعل wish للأشياء التي حصلت في الماضي لكنك نادم عليها الآن.
in the past للماضي
I didn’t see the TV comedian.
→I wish I had seen the TV comedian. Everyone thought he was so funny!
لم أر الممثل الكوميدي التلفزيوني.
← أتمنى لو رأيت الممثل الكوميدي التلفزيوني. اعتقد الجميع انه كان مضحك جدا!
I couldn’t get the joke.
→I wish I had been able to get the joke. I need to improve my English.
لم أستطع استيعاب النكتة.
← أتمنى لو تمكنت من فهم النكتة. انا بحاجة لتحسين لغتي الإنجليزية.
I switched off before the end of the TV show.
→I wish I hadn’t switched off before the end of the TV show. The ending was supposed to be very good.
لقد توقفت عن العمل قبل نهاية العرض التلفزيوني.
← أتمنى ألا أكون قد أغلقت قبل نهاية العرض التلفزيوني. كان من المفترض أن تكون النهاية جيدة جدًا.
Use wish and if only for things you want to happen now or in the future but which you know probably won’t happen.
استخدم wish و if only للأشياء التي تتمنى حدوثها الآن أو في المستقبل ولكنك لن تعرفها على الأرجح.
in the present للحاضر
I am not a big fan of his jokes.
I wish I found his jokes funny.
أنا لست من أشد المعجبين بنكاته.

I feel down today.
I wish I didn’t feel down today. I wish I could cheer up.
أشعر بالإحباط اليوم.
أتمنى ألا أشعر بالإحباط اليوم. أتمنى أن أفرح.
The comedian can’t make people laugh.
The comedian wishes he could make people laugh.
لا يستطيع الممثل الكوميدي أن يضحك الناس.
يتمنى الممثل الكوميدي أن يضحك الناس.
in the future للمُستقبل
He won’t lend me his car. →I wish he would lend me his car.
لن يُعيرني سيارته. ← أتمنى لو يُعيرني سيارته.
My brother will leave for college soon.→ If only he would stay.
سيغادر أخي إلى الكلية قريبًا ← لو بقي فقط.
Expressing Criticism التعبير عن الانتقاد
Use wish or if only with would to express irritation or annoyance with a situation or the particular action of someone else.
استخدام wish أو if only للتعبير عن غضب أو إزعاج من موقف أو عمل خاص لشخص آخر.
I wish he wouldn’t use his cell phone in class. I wish the children would stop interrupting.
أتمنى ألا يستخدم هاتفه الخلوي في الفصل. أتمنى أن يتوقف الأطفال عن المقاطعة.

Use if only …. in the place of wish to express a wish, regret or criticism more emphatically:
