Using where and when in adjective clauses
استخدام when و where في عبارات الصفات
adjective clauses = يعني عبارة صفة, أي أنها تصف ما قبلها
فتصف اسم أو تصف عبارة كاملة وتُسمى في بعض كتب القواعد relative clauses
Where is used to modify a place in an adjective clause. Where cannot be omitted.
تُستخدم where لتحل محل (مكان) في عبارة الوصف. where لا يمكن حذفها.
مثال:
Last year I visited the city where Moctezuma’s treasure is said to be buried.
زرت في العام الماضي المدينة حيث يقال إن كنز موكتيزوما مدفون.
There are alternatives to using where in an adjective clause. Where can be replaced by:
هُناك بدائل لاستخدام where في العبارات الموصوفة.
يمكن استبدال where بـكل من:
(ملاحظة: الجُمل التالية نفس معنى الجُملة السابقة).
(ملاحظة: الجُمل التالية نفس معنى الجُملة السابقة).
1. preposition + which
Last year I visited the city in which Moctezuma’s treasure is said to be buried.
2. that/which + preposition
Last year I visited the city that Moctezuma’s treasure is said to be buried in.
When is used to modify a noun or time in an adjective clause. When can be omitted.
تُستخدم when لتحل محل ( اسم ) أو (وقت ) في عبارة الصفة.
when يُمكن أن تُحذف. لاحظ في المثال التالي وضعناها بين اقواس للدلاله على انه يمكن حذفها والاستغناء عنها.
Last Monday was the day (when) I found a SR 100 bill on the street.
يوم الاثنين الماضي كان اليوم (عندما) وجدت فيه فاتورة 100 ريال في الشارع.
There are alternatives to using when in an adjective clause. When can be replaced by:
هُناك بدائل لاستخدام when في عبارة الصفة.
يُمكن استبدال when بكل من:
1. that (that can also be omitted)
يمُكن حذف that او استخدامها
Last Monday was the day (that) I found a SR 100 bill on the street.
الاثنين الماضي كان اليوم (الذي) وجدت فيه فاتورة 100 ريال في الشارع.
2. preposition + which
Last Monday was the day on which I found a SR 100 bill on the street.
الاثنين الماضي هو اليوم الذي وجدت فيه فاتورة 100 ريال في الشارع.
